Three Good Reasons to Schedule a Back to School Eye Exam for Your Children

School’s about to start again and your to-do list includes everything from finding the right backpacks to stocking up on juice boxes for the lunches you’ll pack. But, did you know that one of the most important things you can do for your children before they start school is to make sure they have a full eye examination?

Here are three great reasons why you should make your children an appointment for an eye exam before you send them off for another year:

Reason 1: They Don’t Learn Well Unless They See Well

Professionals claim that 80% of learning comes through a child’s eyes. With the increase in use of interactive SMARTboards and other technology in the classroom, the importance of good vision has never been as vital to a child’s education success. Gone are the days when seeing close up was good enough to get by in school.

In fact, studies show that up to 60% of children who are classified as “problem learners” actually have undiagnosed vision problems. Don’t let your child suffer unnecessarily when a simple eye exam could identify the problem.

Reason 2: Let Them Adjust to Vision Correction Before School Begins

If your child does need corrective lenses–either glasses or contact lenses depending on your child’s age–it will be much easier on that child if you get them started wearing the frames or contacts before school begins.

For contacts, your older child will need a week or so to adjust to wearing lenses and to get in the habit of properly caring for them. Your child should be prepared to carry along a spare pair of glasses and his or her lens’ case as back-up should the contacts need to be removed for any reason.

For glasses, your child will benefit from starting the school year with the new look. Glasses make a great fashion statement now and many children are wearing plan-o (no prescription) frames just to look cool. Introducing this look on day one of school is a great and easy option to help your child transition to full or part time glasses wear.

Reason 3: Some Problems Are Only Solved Through Early Treatment

Time slips away from all of us. One week turns to a month, and soon a year has flown by and that thing we intended to do never happened. This may be okay for cleaning out your closets…but not for getting your children’s eye’s checked. Some vision problems can only be treated through early detection and treatment so a regular eye exam is essential for identifying possible eye health issues.
